Plenty of options exist for starting a trade business. Most of them solve one piece of the puzzle well, and leave you holding the rest.
Genuinely good at one thing: a website. Some do it beautifully. But you're still the project manager — briefing them, chasing drafts, answering their questions about your own business, then separately sorting registration, invoicing, payments and a Google listing on your own. And it's rarely cheap: several thousand dollars is normal.
Free, in the sense that no invoice arrives. But it costs the thing tradies have least of: time. Learning a website builder, working out what "sole trader" actually means, finding a merchant provider, setting up a job app from a blank screen — each one is a Sunday afternoon you don't get back, and most people underestimate how many Sundays it adds up to.
Some services specialise in getting your ABN and business name sorted, efficiently, for a fee. Useful — but registration was never the hard part. It's one afternoon. The website, the invoicing app, the payments setup, the Google listing all still sit ahead of you afterwards, untouched.
Genuinely capable tools. But a blank template isn't a business — you're still writing every word of copy yourself, still setting up invoicing and payments as separate logins, still doing registration on the side. A website builder builds a website. It doesn't build a business.
Every option above does a real piece of the job well. None of them does the whole job, because none of them was built to. Build your Biz was built around one idea: a tradie going out on their own needs the *whole thing* — registration, website, invoicing, payments, calendar, listing — treated as one job, not six separate ones handed to six separate people.
That's the difference between "we can help with that" and "you're trading."
